What Are Dentures?
Dentures are false teeth that are used to restore your smile after tooth loss. We offer both partial and full dentures at Rivanna Dental Care. Partial dentures consist of one or more false teeth in a metal and plastic framework. This framework attaches to your remaining healthy teeth to hold your dentures in place and restore your smile.
If you've lost most of your teeth, though, Dr. Duong may recommend full dentures. Full dentures consist of a full set of upper, lower, or both rows of teeth. These are placed in a gum-colored acrylic base that fits perfectly over your gums. To get full dentures, you will need to have all of your remaining teeth removed. This is why full dentures are only recommended if you have lost most of your teeth, or if most of your teeth are unhealthy and cannot be saved with alternative treatments.

The Denture Treatment Process
Initial denture fitting
After any necessary preparatory appointments like tooth extractions, you’ll come to Rivanna Dental Care for your denture fitting. Dr. Duong will take detailed images and impressions of your teeth, and use them to make a model of your bite. He will send this information to a dental lab where a set of wax test dentures will be made.
Denture try-ins
After a few weeks, your first set of test dentures will arrive at Rivanna Dental Care. You’ll come back to try them out and see how they feel, and Dr. Duong will make notes about the fit. Then, he’ll send this info to our partner dental lab, and they’ll make another set of test dentures. This process may be repeated multiple times until the fit is perfect.
Final denture placement
Once your test dentures fit perfectly, Dr. Duong will order your final set of partial or full dentures. Then, you’ll come back to our Charlottesville, VA office for your final denture placement. Dr. Duong will check the fit one last time, then send you home with instructions on how to care for your new teeth.
